Western Sydney International Airport.
Taking public furniture above and beyond.

Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) is Australia’s first greenfield airport in 50 years. Designed by Woods Bagot, Cox Architecture and Zaha Hadid Architects, WSI is Sydney’s only 24/7 airport and will serve as a key gateway to the world. Delivered in partnership with Multiplex, Burgtec was appointed to design, prototype and manufacture a complete furniture package for high-traffic terminal environments. The seating and furnishing solutions were designed to meet the airport’s standards for durability, comfort and aesthetics while celebrating the character of the landscape.

Furniture for a new frontier

Burgtec’s scope encompassed bespoke furniture solutions throughout the terminal lounges and passenger concourses. Each piece was engineered to meet strict criteria for longevity, cleanability and accessibility under 24-hour public use. At least half of all seats incorporate integrated charging points, while accessibility features were integrated from the outset. Responding to the terminal’s design palette, furniture colours and materials were inspired by the surrounding landscape, from the red soils of Badgerys Creek to the blue and green hues leading to the mountains. The inclusion of soft furnishings within the terminal’s public areas sets a new standard for Australian airports, pairing design sophistication with performance at scale.

A rigorous, collaborative process

The project demanded exceptional collaboration with an internationally recognised architectural team to uphold the integrity of the design vision while meeting technical and commercial requirements. Every element underwent multiple design reviews and approvals, ensuring compliance with architect specifications and airport requirements. Burgtec’s Central Coast manufacturing facility was instrumental in prototyping, testing and refining each product. The process, described internally as one of Burgtec’s most intensive to date, resulted in furniture that feels integral to the building rather than added after construction.
