The project

Australia's first greenfield airport in 50 years — designed by three world-class studios

Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport is a landmark moment for Australian infrastructure. Designed by Woods Bagot, Cox Architecture and Zaha Hadid Architects, WSI is Sydney's only 24/7 airport and will serve as a key gateway to the world.

Delivered in partnership with Multiplex, Burgtec was appointed to design, prototype and manufacture all departure gate and retail, food and beverage terminal furniture for the airport. The seating and furnishing solutions were designed to meet the airport's standards for durability, comfort and aesthetics while celebrating the character of the landscape. From the red soils of Badgerys Creek to the blue and green hues leading to the mountains — furniture colours and materials were drawn from the surrounding environment.

Furniture for a new frontier

Burgtec's scope encompassed bespoke furniture solutions throughout departure gate and retail, food and beverage terminal areas. Each piece was engineered to meet strict criteria for longevity, cleanability and accessibility under 24-hour public use.

At least half of all seats incorporate integrated charging points, while accessibility features were embedded from the outset. The inclusion of soft furnishings within the terminal's public areas sets a new standard for Australian airports — pairing design sophistication with performance at scale.

Responding to the terminal's design palette, furniture colours and materials were inspired by the surrounding landscape — a deliberate move to root the furniture in the specific character of the Western Sydney landscape.
